Do Dogs Have Super-Hearing?

Writer's picture: Kareem FlemingKareem Fleming

Dogs have superior hearing compared to humans, and it is one of the many things that make them such amazing companions. Dogs can hear sounds at a frequency up to four times higher than humans, allowing them to detect even the faintest of sounds. They can also hear at a much longer distance than us, which is why they can often hear things that we can’t.

Dogs have 18 muscles in their ears that allow them to move and tilt their ears in the direction of a sound. This helps them to pinpoint exactly where the sound is coming from, and allows them to focus on it. Dogs also have an outer ear canal that is much longer than that of humans, allowing them to capture more sound waves. This means that they can hear sounds that are at a lower frequency than we can.

Dogs also have an incredible sense of hearing when it comes to recognizing sounds. Studies have shown that dogs can differentiate between similar sounding words, and even recognize their own name when it is spoken. This makes them very responsive to verbal commands.

Dogs can also hear noises that we can’t detect, such as ultrasonic frequencies. This means that they can detect things that humans can’t, such as rodents scurrying around in the walls or the sound of a car engine far away. This is why dogs can often be seen barking at seemingly nothing, as they are hearing something that we can’t.

Overall, dogs have an incredible sense of hearing that is far superior to that of humans. This makes them great companions and watchdogs, as they can detect sounds and respond to them much better than we can.
